Most of the action aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change takes place on the ground in local communities by passionate and motivated actors. These frontline negotiators are responsible for engaging with stakeholders, marshalling resources, and implementing projects that have a direct impact on people’s health, livelihoods, and environment. The current course empowers youth with the tools they need to conceive, design, and negotiate for climate action projects focused on mitigation within their communities.

Each session of the program focuses upon exploring a central component necessary for the development of a climate action project. During each session a basic concept is introduced, and practical tools are outlined demonstrating how to incorporate the component in the design of the student’s own project. Students’ homework assignment is to use the tools shown to further develop their own project idea. Each tutor is available for two hours the week following their session to answer questions regarding the homework assignment and address any difficulties the students face in developing their project.

While the online course progresses, students will engage with their designated mentor to identify and develop a climate mitigation project within their community. Through larger group engagement and smaller group engagement with their mentor, we hope to establish a community of practice for climate action practitioners in which they can share ideas, support each other and work together to solve some of the many challenges they will face in becoming successful climate change mitigation entrepreneurs.
